The article considers the classification of Belarusian phraseological units from the point of view of their origin. Attention is
paid only to borrowings and loan translations. Three more expressions are added to the borrowings previously described in
literature. We give the etymology of more than ten phraseological units which haven’t been etymologized before or which
received not a very convincing historical-linguistic interpretation (dog in the manger, Molotov cocktail, turusy na kaliosah etc).
The objective of the work: to make the etymological analysis of separate Belarusian phraseological units which haven’t been
etymologized before or which received inaccurate interpretation of their origin. Scientific novelty: the etymology of more than
ten phraseological units is explained or specified in Belarusian linguistics for the first time. The field of application: educational
process in teaching the Belarusian language in high and secondary school, as well as lexicographical (etymological) practice.
