MOMENTUM
• Momentum can be defined as “mass in
motion”
• Momentum = mass x velocity
• p = mv
• The units are kg◦m/s
MOMENTUM
• Mass and velocity are both directly
proportional to the momentum of the object.
• If v stays the same and mass increases the
momentum increases.
• If m stays the same and velocity increases
the momentum will also increase.
• An visa versa.
MOMENTUM
• Example:
• A sprinter with a mass of 80kg has a
speed of 10 m/s. What is the sprinter’s
momentum.
• p = mv
• p = 80kg x 10 m/s
• p = 800 kg◦m/s
MOMENTUM and FORCE
• Force equals the change in momentum
divided by the change in time
• Equation:
F = Δp/t
F = (mvf – mvi)/t
• You don’t need to know how to use it you
just need to understand the concept!!!!!!!
