1 1/19/14 am BBC Sanctity of Life SundayLife is Sacred Intro: John Piper: They are related because both racism and abortion are driven by the same belief. My race is more valuable than your race. Therefore, I have the right to treat you as inferior or undesirable. That’s the voice of racism. In the United States alone about 3,700 babies are aborted each day. That is over 1.3 million annually. King David, through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, is allowed to take a peek into a mother’s womb. Ps 139: 13 For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb. 14 I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. 15 My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. 16 Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there were none of them. Is life sacred? 1. Creation reveals that life is sacred Gen 1:27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. Gen 2:7 then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature. 2 The higher priority of man over animals – 1:26, 28 Gen 1:28 And God blessed them. And God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth." The implications of have dominion over – (good stewards of God’s creation) 1. Anthropic Principle of creation- is that the universe was designed to support and nourish human life. 2. Provision of marriage for man- (the institution of the home) – Gen. 2:18-25 3. Command to be fruitful and multiple – Gen. 1:28; 2:24 4. Consequences of taking a life! The act of murder communicates that man gets to determine the value of life rather than God. God instituted ‘capital punishment’ for willfully taking another’s life: Gen 9:6 Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed, for God made man in his own image. 2. Christ reveals that life is sacred Ps 58:3 The wicked are estranged from the womb; they go astray from birth, speaking lies. Ps 51:5 Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me. This is not a political issue. This is a biblical, ethical, spiritual issue. God gave His Son to humans- who needed a Savior. He gave us the Gospel…- provided the way of salvation through Christ- 3 Think about His care for little children, the weak- (helpless and hurting) The law of Christ…- the law of loveMatt 22:36-40 36 "Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?" 37 And he said to him, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment. 39 And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 40 On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets." 3. Science reveals that life is sacred With technology today, you can see a baby’s smile at 8 weeks, sucking their thumb, responding to sound, recoiling from pain… All major organs are functioning- the nervous system and brain are functioning…- the heart is pumping, the liver, the kidneys, …there’s a finger print. By 21 weeks, a baby, with some help, can live outside the womb. Most abortions are performed for the sake of convenience. One study86% Title Slide: Conclusion: According to the Guttmacher Institute: 22% of all pregnancies (excluding miscarriages) end in abortion. 1 in 4 by age 30 3 in 10 by age 45 Since this is true…- it is likely that there are many here today who have been affected by abortion. There may be some in this room that view this day with dread and shame because you’ve gone through the horror of an abortion. (Women who have had an abortion or men who have pushed women to have an abortion.) It may be in your recent or distant past. 4 John 3:17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Jesus didn’t come to condemn- but rescue. That is what we want to be about as well. There is no sin that is beyond God’s grace to forgive. Please know that everyone in this room is broken. We’ve all made choices at different times in our lives that we look back on with regret. (ex.)David- committed adultery, murdered- a man after God’s own heart. Saul of Tarsus- Jesus saved and forgave him Praise the Lord, there is forgiveness for all. Jesus came to heal our brokenness. But the Bible also tells us: Eph 5:11 Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. What can we do? Repent The sin of indifferentEdmund BurkeThe only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing. We look back on the holocaust- the culture brainwashed the people into thinking – killing Jews by the millions was the right thing to do. In the dark times of segregation in our nation’s history- the culture was brainwashed into thinking the white man was superior to the black man. Have we allowed our culture to influence us on the issue of abortion? 5 Pray Dan 9- Daniel confessed the sins of a nation. He pleaded with God to call the nation back. This should be our prayer as well. Vote This issue should bear significant weight on who we vote for. Since 1973, 54 million babies have been murdered. Get involved Prov 24:11 Rescue those who are being taken away to death; hold back those who are stumbling to the slaughter. We won't change the world through legislation. We will change the world through transformation…- one soul at a time. What will you do? Get involved in the rescue.
