JOB DESCRIPTION JOB TITLE Technical Sales Engineer – Engineering Consultancy REPORTS TO Head of Business Unit: Computing, Engineering and Science THE UNIVERSITY AND JOB CONTEXT Glyndŵr University’s vision is to become indispensable as a significant, relevant and expert partner in regional and national economic and social development. The University sees the development of its research base as a key activity that supports this overall vision by acting as the basis of its academic and knowledge transfer activities. The University is located in a geographical area with a large industrial base. The nearby Wrexham and Deeside industrial estates are two of the largest in Europe with a significant number of manufacturing companies. The Airbus wing assembly plant at nearby Broughton is one of the largest factories in the country. There is considerable scope to undertake research and development in partnership with such companies. Computing, Engineering and Science at Glyndŵr University is based at two sites: Wrexham (main student campus) where the facilities include a flight simulator, electrical and electronics laboratories, performance car laboratory, a recently refurbished workshop, fluids and structures laboratories, engine test bay and both subsonic and supersonic wind tunnels. St. Asaph (centre of excellence) where research includes developments in Solar Energy, and the manufacture of precision optics for the European Southern Observatory. The campus also hosts Glyndwr’s Engineering Project Group which has successfully developed commercial relationships with a number of clients across a broad range of industrial sectors. Due to continued success and growth of the Engineering Projects Group, the University is currently seeking a Sales Engineer to develop relationships and generate new business with a number of organisations globally. We offer high precision engineering design, integration and testing services to a number of prestigious companies across a broad range of industry sectors. The successful candidate would be part of the Engineering Projects Group, a small team of engineering consultants based in St. Asaph North Wales. The candidate would be expected to work with existing clients and identify potential new clients, explore leads and generate business to facilitate the growth of the team. Technical support, in terms of developing concept solutions and proposals, shall be provided by the Engineering team where it is appropriate. 2 JOB PURPOSE To develop leads with new clients and follow up on leads provided by the Senior Engineers. To work with the rest of the Engineering Projects Group to assess technical requirements, develop and provide commercially sound proposals to clients. To take responsibility for the marketing activities. This will include the supervision of the website and other sales media, including the management and coordination of tradeshows and exhibitions. To manage the Sales process: provide a clear definition of the engineering problem and solution, preparation of quotes, follow up on quotations, organisation of demonstrations, preparing and leading sales negotiations. Account management of the Engineering Project Groups existing customers. A. PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES A1. To liaise with and take direction from the Technology Manager and the other engineers in the Engineering Projects Group A2. To develop, define and implement strategies to achieve maximum revenues and profit, and (where set) to achieve revenue and profit targets. A3. To establish, develop and maintain business relationships with current customers and prospective customers in the assigned territory/market segment to generate new business for the Engineering Project Group’s services. A4. To make telephone calls and in-person visits and give presentations to existing and prospective customers. A5. To research sources for developing prospective customers and for information to determine their potential. A6. To develop clear and effective written proposals/quotations for current and prospective customers. A7. To expedite the resolution of customer problems and complaints. A8. To coordinate sales and marketing effort with other departments in the University. A9. To supply the Technology Manager with oral and written reports on customer needs, problems, interests, competitive activities, and potential for new products and services. A10. To keep abreast of product applications, technical services, market conditions, competitive activities, advertising and promotional trends through the reading of pertinent literature and consulting with marketing and technical service areas. A11. To participate in trade shows and conventions. A12. To supervise the website and other sales media. 3 B. PERSONAL ACCOUNTABILITIES B1. CONTACTS Engineering projects Group - Liaison and management EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS The role would suit an engineer who has moved into a sales role, or currently working as a technical sales engineer. The successful candidate should possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills both oral and written, with tenacity and ability to use initiative, they will be highly organised, able to plan their time and manage their own workload effectively. Experience in either engineering and sales is essential, experience in both is desirable. A current driving licence will be essential. .
