Course Banners for use in Blackboard
Banners can visually identify and add a unique look to your Blackboard courses, as shown in the example below.
This document shows two methods for creating a banner: Method 1, Using Adobe Photoshop, and Method 2,
Using Banner Fans. These steps will not cover all that you can do with Adobe Photoshop or Banner Fans. If you
would like to know more about using Adobe Photoshop, IT Services offers training.
Method 1
Creating Banners without a Photo in Adobe Photoshop
Step 1. Get your photo editing software.
Step 2. Open a new file in Adobe Photoshop and select size.
Step 3. Add color to the background.
Step 4. Add text.
Step 5. Save the image in PNG format.
Step 6. Upload the banner to your course site.
Step 1. Get your photo editing software.
On IPFW computers, you should be able to download Adobe Creative Suite, giving you access to Adobe Photoshop.

Step 2. Open a new file in Adobe Photoshop and select size.
Once you have started Adobe Photoshop go to the main menu and select “File,” then “New.”
Name the file “Banner” or whatever makes sense for your course.
Enter 650 pixels for width and 155 pixels for height.
Color Mode should be “RBG Color” then select “OK”.
Step 3. Add color to the background.
To add color to your banner you first must locate the Paint Bucket tool. This should be located on the left side
panel and looks like this.
Next locate the foreground/background colors buttons at the bottom of the left side panel, or the top of the right
side panel.
Click on the top square and choose the hue you desire by first selcting a color from the vertical rainbow bar, then
select the shade or tint that you desire, and select “OK.”
Using the Paint Bucket tool, click on the blank banner image to add your selected color to your banner. If you want
to try a different color, repeat the previous steps.
Step 4. Add Text.
Select the Text tool from the menu on left of the screen.
From the top menu select the font style, size, and color.
Move to the section of the banner you want to start entering your text
Enter the text to identify your course and yourself as the instructor.
Example:
If you would like to move your text, select the move tool.
Select and hold the text you would like to reposition.
Move the text to the new desired location on the banner.

Step 5. Save the image in PNG format.
To save the file as PNG format, go to “File”, “Save As”, change the format to “PNG”, verify the file name and
location into which you’re about to save it.
If you see a popup menu asking about “Interlace,” select “None” and “OK”
Step 6. Upload the PNG banner to your course site.
Log into Blackboard and go to your course.
Go to “Customization” under the Course Management section located to the left side of the screen.
Go to “Style” under the Customization section.
Scroll down to the “Select Banner” section and select “Browse My Computer”.
Locate and select your image, then select “Open”.
Select “Submit” located at the bottom right corner of the page.
Method 2
Banner Fans is a free website that allows the user to create and download simple banners for use on their personal
documents and website. This method will show you how to create a banner for your course site using the Banner
Fans website.
Creating Banners using Bannerfans.com
Step 1. Visit the website
Step 2. Create a layout for your banner
Step 3. Create text for your banner.
Step 4. Rearrange your lines of text on your banner.
Step 5. Choose the banner format.
Step 6. Download the banner.
Step 7. Upload the PNG banner to your course site.
Step 1. Visit the website.
You will need to use your internet browser and go to bannerfans.com
Step 2. Create a layout for your banner.
Under the layout tab you will first want to select the second custom banner size and enter 650 for wide and 155
for high under “Select your banner size”.
Select if you want a solid filled background or a gradient color fill background under “Select a background mode”.
*If you selected a solid color for your background, choose the color you would like under “Choose your background
color” and proceed to the next step.
If you selected a gradient color for your background, choose the two colors you would like under “Choose your
gradient colors”.
Select how you would like the two colors to blend under “Select gradient mode”.
Select “Update my banner” to have your layout choices reflected on your banner.
Step 3. Create text for your banner.
Select the “Text & Fonts” tab.
Here you will add text to your banner. Bannerfans.com gives you up to six lines of text.
You begin by deleting the text already provided in lines one and two.
Enter your text in the lines provided under “Your text”.
Choose the font for each line of text under “Font face”.
Choose the size of your text for each line under “Font size”.
Choose the color of your text for each line under “Color”.
Select “Update my banner” to have your text choices reflected on your banner.
Step 4. Rearrange your lines of text on your banner.
At the top of the website you will see a banner representing all your changes made.
At this point you can rearrange your lines of text on your banner by dragging each line anywhere you want.
Step 5. Choose the banner format.
Select the “Format” tab and choose .PNG
Step 6. Download the banner.
Select “Download banner” and save to a location where it can easily be found.
Step 7. Upload the PNG banner to your course site.
Log into Blackboard and go to your course.
Go to “Customization” under the Course Management section located to the left side of the screen.
Go to “Style” under the Customization section.
Scroll down the screen to the section “Select Banner” and select “Browse My Computer”.
Locate and select your image then select “Open”. Select “Submit” located at the bottom right corner of the page.
