Remote sensing of Earth surface by unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) has now wide
applications in a number of fields of activity and business, also UAV used in forestry for
different purposes. UAV may be used for a number of forest management related purposes such as inventory of forest resources and forest lands, control of forestry operations (thinning, tending, cuttings, transportation etc.), control of illegal loggings, con14
trol and estimation of damage after biotic and abiotic effects on forest (forest fires, insect and diseases etc.).
Analysis of the use UAV for remote sensing of Lisino training and experimental
forest shows a possibility to cover the area as much as 1800 hectares per flight with
resolution 0.5 m/pixel. Such a resolution is enough for informational support needed to
resolve the above mentioned forestry related problems. To cover all the area of Lisino
training and experimental forest which is as much as 28361 hectare will be needed
16 fights of UAV or 4 working days if supposed to do 4 flights per day as average. Estimated cost is as much as 100 RUR/hectare.
Including of UAV into forest inventory technology may give two positive results,
first, to save the working time at least for one year by joining the time for remote sensing and field data collection and, second, decline the cost of inventory because using
of UAV cheaper comparatively with traditional use of big planes.
