Now we are ready to start.
Speaker A
(A boy aged about 20) Everyone I talk to seems to eat rubbish. I can’t understand
it. When I ask them if they learned about health and nutrition at school, they say
they did. We are all students so we have plenty of time to cook. One of my friends
eats fried chicken every day. When I tell him how unhealthy it is, he just smiles
and says: ‘I know, but it’s delicious’!
Speaker B
(A woman aged about 40) Why do people eat so badly in this country? I think it’s a
lack of knowledge. I know schools try to teach their pupils about health but
schoolchildren are too young to care and they forget these lessons later in life.
There should be someone in Parliament who could organize cookery lessons for
adults. Then we could tax fast food and use the taxes to pay for the lessons.
Speaker C
(A man aged about 50) My parents ate very healthily and I enjoyed cooking when I
was younger. I still do, and I love trying new recipes from countries that I’ve visited. So why do I eat fast food or frozen meals so often? I’m not poor and I can afford to buy high quality ingredients. The problem is that I’m a politician and I get
home, exhausted at about 9pm. If I had to cook, I wouldn’t get to bed until about
midnight.
Speaker D
(A girl about 18) I’ve heard a lot of people complaining that supermarkets are forcing us to buy packaged food and that there are too may fast-food restaurants. I’ve
heard people blaming schools for not teaching cookery anymore but why? There
are thousands of websites with cheap, healthy recipes from all over the world on
them. It’s not difficult to change your diet. Just do it and don’t expect others to do
everything for you.

Speaker E
(A man aged about 30) Jamie Oliver is right. We can’t blame poverty. We can’t
blame politicians and we can’t blame a lack of time. I know Britain doesn’t have a
long history of healthy food but we live in an Internet age now. We can get recipes
from anywhere in the world. A lot of people in the world have a lot less to live on
than even the poorest people in this country but they don’t eat badly. Let’s start
looking to them for ideas.
Speaker F
(A woman aged about 30) People say that poor people eat badly in this country.
They say that, in other countries, people buy cheap vegetables and eat healthily.
They ask why we don’t do the same. Well, I had great cookery lessons at school
but I can’t afford to cook healthy meals. Why? Because fresh fruit and vegetables
are very expensive here. Not only that but most of the recipes I know need a lot of
cooking time which means higher gas and electric bills.

(Woman aged about 40) Hello, is that Mr Harris?
(Man aged about 40) Yes.
Woman: It’s Mrs French here. From Oak Avenue. You did a lot of work for my
next door neighbour last year, Mrs Green. I was wondering if you were free to do
some work for me sometime.
Man: Let me look at my diary. This week I’m painting a house and next week I’m
converting an attic into an extra bedroom. But I’m free in two weeks’ time. What
do you need doing?
Woman: Oh, lots of things! The most important are the windows. They’re very
old. I’d like some new, plastic windows.
Man: I’m sorry. I don’t do windows. I can recommend someone, though. A very
good worker and very reasonable. I can give you his phone number, if you like.
Woman: Oh, thank you. I’ll just get my pen.
Man: The number is 0133 76453 and his name is Paul. He’s often booked up a
long time in advance. The sooner you phone him the better.

Woman: I’ll phone him today. The other main job I want done is to redecorate the
upstairs bathroom. I had some other workmen in to redecorate the downstairs bathroom. They did it nicely but they took ages and made a mess in the house.
Man: OK.
Woman: And I’m thinking about making some changes to my garage but I’m not
sure exactly what. I’d really like you to have a look at it and give me some ideas
about what could be done.
Man: No problem.
Woman: And then there are some small jobs that my husband should have done
but hasn’t got around to. Things like putting up shelves and changing the lights in
the children’s bedrooms. I’ll probably think of lots more things before you get
here!
Man: Right, well I can come round one evening after work and have a look. Then
I’ll be able to tell you exactly how long it will take. How about Wednesday at
about 6pm?
Woman: Thursday would be better. My son has tennis lessons on Wednesday and
I have to collect him at about 6.30 so we wouldn’t have much time.
Man: Well, maybe Thursday, then.
Woman: Thursday’s fine. My husband won’t be at home but he doesn’t take much
interest in the house anyway so that’s no problem.
Man: See you on Thursday. Goodbye.
Woman: Thank you. Goodbye.

vantage of these volunteers. They have official looking websites but almost all the
information on them, apart from the country the volunteers will go to, is often
false.
Man: Can you give some examples?
Woman: Yes, I can. I did my gap year when I was eighteen. As I was interested in
animal conservation and had been accepted by a university to study zoology the
following year, I chose a position on what was described as an animal sanctuary in
Central America. It turned out to be a zoo. I came home after one month. It was an
expensive lesson.
Man: Expensive?
Woman: Yes, I paid two thousand pounds for my six months placement. I didn’t
get any of it back, of course. The price included my flights, a place to stay, which
was a small, dirty hut with no bathroom, and food.
Man: I guess that wasn’t very tasty!
Woman: Actually, it was. I’m a vegetarian and almost all the food consisted of
beans and rice with spicy sauces. I sat and ate on my own and read a lot. There was
no-one to talk to. They were all really unfriendly.
Man: So what happened after you returned?
Woman: Well, I had a lot of free time before I started university so I decided to set
up a website with advice for volunteers. I didn’t have much time for it while I was
at university but I kept it going and, since I left university, it’s been a full time job.
Man: It must be very useful.
Woman: I hope so. Interestingly, I’ve started noticing older people coming to the
site for advice. More and more retired people who are still fit and healthy are doing
voluntary work. Also a few well-off, middle-aged people, often married couples
whose children have grown-up and left home. Although young people still make
up the majority of volunteers, they only account for about fifty percent of the people using my site. I think this is because they have access to more advice at school
and from people they know whereas older people are on their own.

A. Comic books are an important part of pop culture and loved by many. Just look
at how many Hollywood films are based on superhero comics such as SpiderMan, Batman, Superman and others! However, some people mistakenly
assume they are only for children or that they are only about
superheroes. There are many wrong ideas about comics, and they often come
from people who have never even read them.
B. Comics first appeared in the USA in the early 1900's as comic strips in
newspapers. They were called 'comics' because they were about comical
characters. Later they included adventure and crime stories and other genres,
and became serialized. The more popular ones were printed in book format and
were called comic books. These were especially common during the Great
Depression. But they were often criticized for being 'literature for the illiterate'.

E. Nowadays there are a great variety of comic books that are radically different
from the original comic strips in newspapers. They have also become more
acceptable in society: earlier, if you were not a child but were interested in
comics, you were looked down upon and could be called a geek or a nerd; now
comic books have become largely mainstream. Comic book conventions where
fans gather and even dress up as their favorite superheroes are very popular.
F. The USA is not the only country with a history of comic books. France and
Japan have their own unique traditions. In France, comics are known as bandes
dessinées and in Japan, manga. Each of these has its own style and history of
development. The highly stylized Japanese manga characters with big eyes and
brightly colored spiky hair have become just as popular around the world as
comics in the west.
G. The medium of comics will undoubtedly continue to grow. Over time, the
stereotypes that surround them will hopefully change. There is no reason for
comics to be any different from other media such as books, films or paintings.
Comics, like these other formats, will always produce bestsellers of little
artistic merit, but there will also be masterpieces equivalent to great works of
art or high literature.

C. Comic books about crime fighters and criminals were in demand in the 1930's.
One of them, Detective Comics, had a series about a man who dressed up as a
bat to fight criminals. Fans loved him so much that eventually he had his own
comic book and became known as Batman. Due to his success, other
superheroes were soon invented. Superhero comics continued to grow in
popularity and are now what people often associate comics with.
D. In the 1960's comic book writers began to experiment more. Some explored
genres and themes not usually used for comics, others experimented with
artwork, using more sophisticated styles. In the 70's and 80's these trends
intensified and even the format changed. In 1978 Will Eisner wrote A Contract
with God, the first full book length comic. Such works were no longer called
comic books, but graphic novels.

The Sea Monkeys
More than anything else, Suzie wanted a little puppy to cuddle, play with
and take on long walks. In short, she wanted a pet, but the problem was her mom.
"Why can't I have a dog?"
"Suzie, you know we've been through this a thousand times. I have allergies
to animals, and that means no pets."
Suzie knew it was true. Not only did her mom have severe allergies to
animals, she was also highly allergic to practically everything that existed,
including her daughter when she asked this question a million times a day.
"What about your baby brother, isn't he more fun than some silly dog?" Her
mom offered in consolation.
Suzie did not agree. To her, her infant brother was a disgusting smelly little
thing that did nothing but cry all day long. Before he was born, she’d had hopes of
dressing him up in funny little costumes and playing with him all day, but he
turned out to be no fun at all. He couldn't even crawl!
"Why can't I at least have a fish?" She demanded. "You aren't allergic to
fish, are you?"
"No, I'm not. There's so much trouble, though. You have to change the water
every so often and clean the tank.”
By this time Suzie had practically given up hope and plopped down on her
bed in despair. Gloomily, she picked up a Spider-Man comic on her bedside table.
Her mom didn't approve of her comic books but she didn't care. She liked them
much more than My Little Pony or Strawberry Shortcake, which the other girls in
her class liked. She especially liked them because her mother didn't, and felt she
was getting revenge for not being able to get a pet.
What caught her eye, however, was an advertisement in the back of the book
for something called ‘sea monkeys’. The caption read: "Enter the wonderful world
of amazing live sea monkeys. Own a bowlful of happiness – instant pets!" In the
picture was a smiling family of sea monkeys who looked more human than
monkey but with funny heads and tails. The ad promised that they were "eager to
please" and could be trained for tricks. The best part though was that they only cost
$5. Suzie had that much left from her last birthday. She decided to send off for
them without telling her mom.
A few weeks later the parcel arrived. Inside, there was a small plastic
aquarium and two little paper packets, one labeled ‘eggs’ and the other ‘food’. She
filled the tank with water, sprinkled the eggs over the top and waited. Nothing
happened. She put them in the back of her closet behind her clothes and tried not to
think of them for the rest of the day.

The next day she pulled them out and saw to her surprise tiny little things
swimming around, like specks of dust. They looked nothing like the playful sea
monkeys in the ad.
Over the weeks, they grew a bit more. Once she decided to put them on the
windowsill in the sunlight to get a better look at them. Her disappointment was
terrible when she finally understood they were just tiny worm-like creatures. At
that moment, her mom walked into the room.
"What is that?" She exclaimed in surprise, then broke into a smile. "Sea
monkeys! I had these when I was your age. I didn't even know they still sold
them."
"But Mom, they don't look like monkeys at all!" Suzie said in dismay.
"No, silly, they aren't real monkeys, they're a kind of specially modified
shrimp, but they're still fun and not any trouble at all to keep", her mom replied.
Susan soon got over her initial disappointment and even grew to love her
new pets, which were certainly more fun than having no pets at all and especially
more entertaining than her baby brother!
She wanted to make her mom unhappy for not allowing her to have pets.
She thought they were a lot better than My Little Pony or Strawberry Shortcake.
She found them gloomy, which reflected her own feelings.
