1.03 The Laws of Motion Newton’s first law of motion The first law of motion has two simple principles: An object at rest (not moving) will stay at rest unless an unbalanced force acts on it. An object in motion will stay in motion (in a straight line and at a constant speed) unless an unbalanced force acts on it. Newton’s second law Newton’s second law of motion states that the acceleration of an object depends directly upon the net force and inversely upon the mass Newton’s third law Newton’s third law of motion is all about the interactions between forces. Forces come in pairs that are equal but opposite. The third law of motion states that for every action (force applied) there is an equal and opposite reaction (resulting force) that will occur.
