phonics in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2
• Phonics continued into Year 3 alongside
spelling.
• Spelling taught for 30 minutes a week in
years 4,5 and 6 with the emphasis being on
learning spelling strategies and rules and

Phoneme: the smallest unit of sound in a word.
Grapheme: letters representing a phoneme.
Digraph: two letters which make one sound.
Trigraph: three letters which make one sound.
Spilt digraph: a digraph in which the two letters are not
adjacent.
• Segmenting- identifying the individual sounds in a spoken
word and writing down each sound to form the word.
• Blending- recognising the letter sounds in a written words
and merging them in the order they are written to
pronounce them.
